Abstract
Positive rates for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) reflect not only the disease status of hepatitis but also general level of hygiene. And Korea has long been the endemic area of the disease. Since the introduction of vaccination for hepatitis B in 1980¡¯s, the positive rates for HBsAg and anti-HBs changed significantly. To analyze the current status of these parameters, authors investigated the positive rates for HBsAg and anti-HBs in the subjects on health screening tests in Kangbuk Samsung Hospital from January, 1999 to October, 1999. Study subjects were 74,580 (male; 47,470, female; 27,110) for HBsAg and 69,197 (male; 43,624, female; 25,573) for anti-HBs. Serum specimen from the subjects were analyzed with enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using OMNI instrument (Bio-TEK Ins. Inc., Vermont, USA) and Bioelisa reagents (Biokit, Barcelona, Spain). The positive rate for HBsAg was 3.85% (2,870/74,580) and that of anti-HBs was 74.70% (51,690/69,197). There were significant differences between sex in positive rates for HBsAg and anti-HBs; male population showed higher positive rate (4.41 %) for HBsAg than female (2.87%) (p?0.001); female showed higher positive rate (80.29%) for anti-HBs than in male (7 1.42%) (p?0.001). our results showed lower positive rate for HBsAg and higher positive rate for anti-HBs compared with previous reports. In conclusion, the positive rate for HBsAg declined and that of anti-HBs increased and there were significant difference in positivity of HBsAg and anti-HBs between male and female.
